The Isle of Man is located in the Irish Sea between England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. The island has many tourist attractions and fascinating points of interest, so it’s an excellent place for your first 2021 vacation!
Though not a large island (33 miles long and 12 miles wide), it has a moderate climate and more than a hundred miles of beautiful coastline, so once you head there, expect to see golden sandy beaches and steep, rugged cliffs! The island is mostly hilly, but you’ll see woodlands, gentle uplands, and lovely waterfalls.
A tour of Douglas (the capital city) is a must while you’re on a visit to the Isle of Man. Many of the island’s best spots are there. We put this list of the top five places to visit in the Isle of Man specifically for you as you embark on your journey to such a wonderful place!
- The Town of Douglas
Douglas, the Isle of Man’s capital, sits on a beautiful bay with River Douglas wetting its way across the land. A wide range of tourist attractions includes golf, swimming pools, and horse-drawn trams.
Visitors always appreciate a stroll through the two-mile promenade with its fantastic view across the bay. And landmarks such as the Tower of Refuge (a small castle-like structure built to house sailors shipwrecked on the St Mary’s isle) are always unique things to see.
When it comes to accommodation, there are luxury hostels to modest guesthouses, so take your pick. Oh, and there are excellent places for shopping too!
- Douglas Head
Douglas Head is a rocky outcrop overlooking Douglas harbor and accessible along the historic Marine Drive provides. It offers some of the Isle of Man’s best views. We advise you to take a photograph as you enter the drive’s ornate gate because you’ll adore what you see!
Douglas Head also has the Grand Union Camera Obscura. This unique renovated 19th-century attraction uses natural light and a series of mirrors to project images of the area surrounding it onto the darkened building walls to stunning effect. Honestly, this is something you have to see yourself to appreciate it!
Another must-see attraction is the Douglas lighthouse. It was built in 1857 and is easily accessible. The original lighthouse keeper’s cottage offers you a selection of great treats and is available for rentals during the vacation period.
- Manx Museum
The Manx Museum is an excellent museum with more than 10,000 years of island history behind it. The exhibits there offer you a chance to see the works of brilliant Manx artists and other British painters. The museum is also home to the National Library, and that’s not something you want to miss.
