4 Must-See Places in Greece

Greece is known for its centuries-long history, being the birthplace of Western Civilization and democracy, its ancient temples, folklore, and mythology. In particular, that last has been the foundation of most cinemas, theatres, and book productions. Here are some places you shouldn’t skip on your next visit to Greece.

  • Delphi Theatre

The ancient theatre of Delphi is an archeological site recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. It was monumental in ancient Greek religion, believed to be the sanctuary and oracle of Apollo.

It was built in the 4th century and could seat up to 5000 spectators. Adjacent is a town of the same name.

  • Metéora

Meteora is a formation of rock in central Greece on which one of the largest Eastern Orthodox monasteries is founded. And quite precipitously too.

It offers an amazing view, and even though it was established in the 14th century, it still stands today. The monasteries were deliberately built atop these rock pillars to give the monks enough seclusion from the outside world.

  • The Samariá Gorge

The Samariá Gorge is a canyon. The gorge, which attracts up to 250,000 yearly tourists from all over the world, is an extremely popular hiking trail leading between the White Mountains and Mt. Volakias. You’ll go through pine trees and ancient cypresses to emerge on the other side at the village of Agia Roumeli on the shores of the Libyan Sea.

The village of Samariá also lay in the gorge but was vacated in 1962 to make way for the park. The park is a habitat for many flowers and birds, including the endangered Kri-kri (Cretan goat).

  • Santorini

Santorini is a volcanic island on the southern Aegean Sea. It is famous for its white-washed walls, views of the Aegean Sea, and beautiful sunsets.

In midday, the Sea casts a beautiful blue hue on the walls, and in the sunset, it’s a mirage of deep reds, oranges, and blues—a sight to behold.  Being a favored honeymoon destination for newlywed couples, it boasts of beautiful architectural Cyclade style.
