Saint Pierre is a French overseas territory with heavy Chinese, Indian, East African, and French cultural influences. This is evident in its cuisine, for example.
The place is blessed with a beautiful landscape that is best taken in with aerial views, golden beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls, and other natural wonders. Here are some must-try things on your visit to Saint Pierre.
- Visit Domaine du Café Grillé
Saint Pierre has a rich botanical story, and this coffee plantation shows you everything. The plantation is home to different crops and spices such as vanilla, sugar canes, pineapple suckers and guava trees, arrays of orchids, and more than 200 species of palm. Some exotic plants are endemic to the island on this plantation.
- Saga du Rhum
If you like your spirits and alcohol, then a visit to Saga du Rhum would interest you. Saga du Rhum is Saint-Pierre’s oldest family distillery and is a museum dedicated entirely to the island’s rum.
You can choose between a guided or an independent tour; the difference is that you can ask questions with the former. On your own, you could still get some of the information from the detailed panels that explain sugar cane processing and distillation processes.
There is also a bar in the distillery where you can try out the island’s various rums for free. The liquor ranges in variety from “agricultural” and infused rum to rum with different aging periods.
- Marché Forain
If you want a gift to take home or if you’re going to try some of Saint-Pierre’s street food, then the Marché Forain market is the one for you.
Open only on Saturdays; the market is packed with delicacies like honey, jams, handcrafts, and packets of spices. You can also stock up on local fruit, fresh fish, meat, cheese, and milk.
